![]() ![]() If you know what you are doing, you can make keys yourself. Most government keys, along with a lot of other keys, actually have the key cuts and bitting stamped onto the key. I actually forget which one it comes under. I'll bite: Some states have actual laws on the books pertaining to this, albeit in California a key marked Do Not Duplicate or similar must have a letter accompanying the request and that letter is kept on fileįor example, the Postal Service under Title 18 either 1702 or 1704, specifically states that keys may not be reproduced for postal boxes. They often pull the “I’m the one who had it printed that way” line, which was of course unverifiable, so it didn’t work.Īnyone else have experience with this? Is it actually illegal to do? Or is it just a Lowe’s policy? One manager told me that Lowe’s would need some special liability insurance if they were to copy such keys, and that mostly only locksmith shops had this. Some customers accepted this, others would freak out and demand we do it anyway. 7/10 times when I explained this to a customer, they’d ask for a manager and said manager would have to waste time telling them the exact same thing I just explained. I was told by both management and higher ranked employees to never ever copy them and to send the customer to a locksmith. At least once a week, someone would ask me to copy a key for them, and it would be one with either “Do Not Copy” or “Do Not Duplicate” engraved on it. So I was a red vest for close to 5 years, from about the start of 2015 to the tail end of 2019. ![]() DIY subreddit - Look at awesome work by other Do It Yourself-ers.Home Improvement Subreddit - Gain inspiration, join the ongoing discussions. All moderators must follow the Moderator Code of Conduct without exception.
